instrument creation, instruments.xml and TAB's (2)

Maurizio M. Gavioli
About the second topic of this kind recently discussed on the IRC channel:

2) When creating a linked staff, you always get a pitched staff; for pitched + TAB linked staves, the custom is to have the pitched staff first and the TAB staff below; it can be obtained (creating the TAB, linking a pitched staff, moving the pitched staff above), but with multiple steps, and above all not obvious for eveyone.

The proposal is to add to the instrument creation wizard a way to modify the staff group / type / preset after the instrument have been added and before the instrument dlg box is closed.

I assume a button would be present "Change staff type"; it would bring a dlg box allowing to choose among the staff groups (pitched, TAB, percussion) and for each group among the default types / presets.

The staff type should of course be listed in the right side of the Instruments dlg box together with the other properties now displayed.

Possibly a similar button could be added to allow changing the clef (but changing the initial clef of an instrument in a score already created -- i.e. when coming back to this dialogue a second time -- might or might not be possible, I don't know).

Creating staff combination like pitched + TAB or any other would be easier: even if the number of steps will probably be more or less the same, each would be much more obvious to the users (and would hopefully generate less support requests).

Comments of any kind are welcome.

I agree that it should be easier to create linked staves in the Wizard. However, I would not add more UI elements right away.
I would prefer to see  new instruments such as "Guitar (Staff + Tab)" and the same for the popular instruments. At the very least a template for guitar/bass/ukulele which are the most popular.

If we want to add more UI to deal with the less popular instruments right in the new score wizard. I would propose to do it with combo boxes listing "staff group - preset" and maybe a "Custom" element redirecting to the staff type dialog.

Why adding new buttons is a problem? Are we already in a 'translation frozen' stage or something like?

I however agree that explicit 'compound instrument' definitions like "Guitar (Staff + Tab)" would be more obvious; one or two of them -- if very commonly used -- may make sense, but the problem with this approach is that it may lead to an inordinate grow of combination instruments, while a single "Change staff type" button (or other UI element with similar functionality) will allow any combination whoever user may need, usual or unusual.
At the very least a template for guitar/bass/ukulele which are the most popular.
This is definitely a possibility, not necessarily alternative to the above: templates are always useful.
If we want to add more UI to deal with the less popular instruments right in the new score wizard, I would propose to do it with combo boxes listing "staff group - preset" and maybe a "Custom" element redirecting to the staff type dialog.
This sounds functionally equivalent to my proposal; I quoted a button but any other UI element doing the same would do; this post is about linked staves (where the problem is greater as there is no a way to select the type of a linked stave), but of course a staff type selector (of whatever kind) would also make more flexible and general the creation of (unlinked) instruments, allowing for instance to get rid of many pitched/tablature variants (I think we already should have 6 of them, possibly more, only to accommodate the instruments already present in instruments.xml, before Michael's magnus opus).

So, are we agreeing on something?

I don't think I like the idea of combining instruments such as 'Guitar (Staff + Tab)'.

I would prefer that users add any additional staffs manually.
