Thank you!
Is there any big warning that these versions of MuseScore are not meant for daily usage and that files created with one version might not be editable by the next one?

Re: musescore-git

I have replaced my stable 2.0.2 with the -git version yesterday and everything works perfectly while some old and annoying issues are fixed now. :)
There was some formatting stuff in individual parts that I had to re-do an the preferences had to be set again, but apart from that no issues at all.
What you can do is store a git-version package that works for you in a safe place (just copy it over from /var/cache/pacman/pkg) and in case an update does not work for you, you can simply go back to that local package.

Well, I'm not talking as a user, more as a developer and support person who will have to deal with people complains ;)
It's not manageable to save a copy of a version for each file and futhermore, if you send a mscz file created with MuseScore-git to someone else, she will not be able to open it... That's the main reason why the nightlies for windows and MacOSX contains a big warning. I will take a look to include this warning in master.

Re: musescore-git

oberon
Ah, sorry for the misunderstanding, @lasonic! ;)
My understanding is that one uses a build for a certain time - the AUR git package will not update automatically unless I update pkgver manually and I will only do that after I have verified that the current version works (maybe it will be better then to use specific commits in the PKGBUILD?)
Anyway, I thought that, after a while when someone would like to see if a newer version suits him better, he could save the latest package (that's just one single file and under normal circumstances it stays in pacman cache anyway and you can downgrade easily) until verified that the newer one is indeed helpful.
I was not aware though that the mscz files are not compatible, really? But that would mean that everytime you upgrade to a new release your older scores might not work, either?

I will post a comment to the package that will be visible when you install it in the terminal at least.
Also you can assume that the typical AUR user is normally aware that when you have a choice between a regular package musescore-2.0.2 and an alternative version musescore-git-r9850.77e980d ;) that you are possibly dealing with unfinished software here...

Hi,

We make sure that from one (official) release to another compatibility works but git master being our playground users can't assume anything about compatibility (or stability). Also, we are currently working on two branches, master which will be come MuseScore 2.1 (and files created with this version will not always be editable by 2.0.X) and the 2.0.3 branch (a bug fix release for the current 2.0.2 release, compatible with 2.0.X).

Ok, great! Thanks for the clarification!
PS. and sorry for mis-spelling your name last time, @Lasconic ! ::)

Also you can assume that the typical AUR user is normally aware that when you have a choice between a regular package musescore-2.0.2 and an alternative version musescore-git-r9850.77e980d ;) that you are possibly dealing with unfinished software here...

It's not manageable to save a copy of a version for each file and futhermore, if you send a mscz file created with MuseScore-git to someone else, she will not be able to open it... That's the main reason why the nightlies for windows and MacOSX contains a big warning. I will take a look to include this warning in master.

Is there any big warning that these versions of MuseScore are not meant for daily usage and that files created with one version might not be editable by the next one?

Re: musescore-git

ericfontainejazz
I've installed your musescore-git package via yaourt on my arch machine.  A few sugestions:

1) After finish compiling, yaourt checks for conflicting packages and says "musescore-git and musescore are in conflict. Remove musescore? [y/N]".  I would prefer if these two packages did not conflict, since it is useful to have both the latest stable and latest git coexisting in the system.  I think this could be resolved by appending "-git" so the resulting binary is named "musescore-git".

The instructions here https://musescore.org/en/developers-handbook/compilation/compile-instructions-ubuntu-14.10-git#Build-an-executable-file lead me to think you can use:

make SUFFIX="-git" LABEL="Git Build"
sudo make SUFFIX="-git" LABEL="Git Build" install

2) When I go to help->about I see revision is 3543170 but the latest commit in musescore git master is not that number.  I think you need to do "make revision" first in the arch build script before making musescore so that it gets that number in that about window.  (I'm pretty sure I'm using this compiled version by looking at the date on the binary I'm executing)

3) I use distcc and ccache as my default compilers (I've set in my /etc/environment).  (FYI: distcc allows me to utilize all computers in my home network when compiling, and ccache supposidly reuses results or previous compilations when source files are same to save time). Initially when trying to build your package via yaourt, I got an error "CMake Error...The C++ compiler /usr/bin/ccache is not able to compile a simple test program"...I've posted full yaourt build output here: http://pastebin.com/cz4Y36Kp but suffice to say after switching to plain CC=gcc and CXX=g++ for compiler variable names, then the build works fine.  Now I haven't looked further into why it failed...it is possible that something is wrong with my computer setup, but normally I can build musescore just fine via makefile or in qtcreator with distcc and ccache.  I might look into this more...can't say for sure it is the build script's fault.

4) I agree that should contain a warning about save file versions.  I think should have a warning in the startup splash screen as well as have the build script print that warning.

Re: musescore-git

Thank you Eric, I will look into your suggestions.
Feel free to edit the PKGBUILD locally and let me know about your findings, too!
I will also think about a more suggestive pkgdesc and add a warning to be printed by the install script.

Re: musescore-git

Just updated the AUR:

SUFFIX="-git" LABEL="Git Build" works great, thank you!
conflicts-array removed so the git version is now installable alongside the stable release.

New Install message reads:
This is NOT A STABLE RELEASE!
Scores created with this dev-build may be incompatible with other releases of MuseScore!
You can install this dev-version alongside a stable release.
To execute git version use command: 'musescore-git'

pkgdesc='Latest git-version of the sheet music editor MuseScore'

The about says "Unstable Prerelease for Version: 2.1.0 / Revision: 3543170"
Looks good to me. This Rev.Nr. is obvioiusly something different from gitrev or gitcommit. It's a completely different format anyway.

That would mean it's not correct.
$(git rev-parse --short HEAD) prints the commit hash, wich is 77e980d

This is indeed what it should be showing. And does in the nightly builds for Mac and Windows
